3) Make strategic and consistent use of underlined, italicized, and bold text:
Bold the role or the company, depending on which one you want to emphasize. If you only have one internship, brag about the company you interned with. If you are experienced, it is better to turn your attention to naming. Enter the date of employment in italics and make sure they are all in the same format.
4) Be discerning in your use of any design elements:
With them, your resume will stand out, but be careful not to overdo it. Note that if you use icons or graphics to display information, these are useless if your resume is filtered by the ATS.
Avoid darker colors such as navy blue, burgundy, and dark green when using traditional industries such as finance or law, but choose more for creative industries such as advertising and design. Feel free to use lots of colors.
5) Align everything to the left:
Left-aligning all content except dates and job record locations makes review easier. Instead of using an extra row, put the date and place in the right column.
6) Keep your margins 1” all around:
However, if space is a problem, you can reduce the top and bottom margins to ½ inch and the side margins to ¾ inch.
7) Use bullets, not paragraphs, to list work experience:
Each bullet point should not exceed two lines. Recruiters have short attention spans, so use your language sparingly.
8) Write numbers in digits:
Writing numbers in words takes up a lot of space and reduces readability. For example, “$50,000” is easier to read than “$50,000”.
9) The perfect resume length is one page:
If you are very experienced, employers are more than happy to accept and often expect a two-page resume. Otherwise, keep it to one page.
10) Don’t include a photograph:
If you’re not an actress or model, there’s a reason you shouldn’t include your photo on your resume. It can even be considered unprofessional by employers in countries with strict anti-discrimination and employment laws, such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Finally, the images are not ATS friendly.
